BendBroadband/C-SPAN Challenge Students

to Compete in National Documentary Contest

This Year’s Theme: A Message to the U.S. Congress

*** $100,000 in prizes to be awarded ***

Bend, Oregon  – BendBroadband and C-SPAN are challenging students to grab their video cameras and tell Congress what should top its agenda in 2014.

In partnership with BendBroadband, C-SPAN is calling for entries in its 2014 StudentCam competition. Now in its tenth year, C-SPAN’s national contest invites students in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) to produce five- to seven-minute video documentaries using C-SPAN programming. BendBroadband has been a proud local sponsor of StudentCam since 2008.

The theme of this year’s documentaries is, “A Message to the U.S. Congress: What’s the Most Important Issue Congress Should Consider in 2014?”

This year C-SPAN has doubled the number of prizes it’s awarding as well as the size of its prize purse. The C-SPAN Education Foundation supports the contest by awarding $100,000 in cash prizes. The foundation will grant 150 student awards and 53 teacher awards. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000. Multiple prizes of $3,000, $1,500, $750, $500 and $250 will be awarded to students in both school categories.

This year high school students are competing on a regional level; the U.S. is divided into three regions for the contest. Middle school students will continue to be judged on a national basis. The grand prize will be awarded to the best overall entry. For complete rules and a breakdown of the regions, go to www.studentcam.org.

The deadline for submitting entries is Jan. 20, 2014. Winners will be announced in March. C-SPAN will air the top winning videos in April. For complete competition details and entry instructions, go to www.studentcam.org.

Competition Guidelines

Entries must represent varying points of view, and include C-SPAN video that supports the documentary’s topic. Students, working alone or in groups of up to three, can upload their entry form and videos directly online at www.studentcam.org. Documentaries must be the original work of students; however, teachers may provide guidance and critiques.

The documentaries will be judged by a panel of C-SPAN representatives and educators, and evaluated on a number of criteria, including the thoughtful examination of the competition’s theme, quality of expression, adherence to the time limit, inclusion of varying points of view, and use of C-SPAN programming.
