In The Martian — an Oscar nominee for Best Picture — Matt Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, who is presumed dead and left behind by his crew after a fierce storm during a mission to Mars. With limited supplies, he must rely on his smarts and spirit to survive and find a way home. According to Entertainment Weekly, The Martian “turns science and problem solving into an edge-of-your-seat experience.”

In this action/crime thriller, a principled FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating drug war in the border area between the U.S. and Mexico by bringing down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel. Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin star in the film, which is nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing.

Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise and fall of N.W.A., the influential gangster rap group that emerged from the mean streets of Compton, California to find tremendous success in the late 1980s. Nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, the film is “one of the better musical biopics of the last 20 years,” according to film critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times.

In this animated favorite, set seven years after the original Hotel Transylvania, Mavis and Johnny have a young son named Dennis, whose lack of vampire abilities worries his grandfather, Dracula. When Mavis and Johnny go to visit Johnny’s parents, Dracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in Dennis. The film’s all-star cast includes Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Dana Carvey, Mel Brooks and more.

The Intern stars Robert DeNiro as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who discovers that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Bored and seeking to get back into the game, he applies to a senior citizen intern program and lands a gig at About the Fit, a fast-growing fashion website led by Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway. The movie got mixed reviews, but Roeper loved it, lauding its insightful dialogue and supporting cast.
