An Emmy ® statuette is at the Zolo Media office thanks to the efforts of the Zolo news team of Joe Dean and Joe Cima.
Dean and Cima were the co-winners of an Emmy in the National Academy of the Arts Northwest Region that was presented June 3 in Seattle. The Zolo team won in the News Promotion Campaign category. The winning campaign included a series of 30-second commercials asking local and area residents to tell their life story. The commercials promote the new Central Oregon Daily show.
Dean works as the creative services producer at Zolo and he was the writer/director/producer of the commercials, while Cima is co-writer and videographer for the promotional pieces. KOMO News in Seattle were co-winners of the Emmy with Dean and Cima.
The project came about when Zolo Central Oregon Daily Content Manager Curtis Vogel came to Dean’s office asking him to create a campaign using the phase, “What’s Your Story?” That was the spark that set the project in motion.
The kick-off commercial notes that “everyone has a story to tell.” The spot reminds viewers that “A good story has more than just a beginning and an end. It has conflict and struggle, happiness and pain and a good story takes you somewhere you have never been.” The first spot was a 30-second ad that was broadcast during the 2016 Super Bowl.
From there, the Joes produced commercials including a spot about Marge Kalama and her life on the reservation and how it impacted her as a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. The duo also produced a story about hardworking, dairy plant operator Bob Eberhard of Eberhard’s Dairy.
“It was an honor to even be nominated for an Emmy,” said Dean. “To win is something that is more than we ever imagined.”

The Emmy Award is an American award that recognizes excellence in the television industry. There are 20 total regional chapters located across the United States. Each chapter has regional awards to recognize excellence in all the regional television markets, including state to state programming as well as local news and locally produced shows. Clean waterworks campaign commercial wins regional award
Summit High Schooler Makenzie Hice and Zolo’s Creative Service Producer Joe Dean recently developed a commercial together for the City of Bend’s Clean Waterworks campaign. Zolo’s Creative Services Department collaborates with the non-profit organization Bend Film and the City of Bend to help young filmmakers learn to take their idea, work in a studio, use professional equipment and lighting and produce an actual commercial message.
Makenzie’s 30-second commercial received an Excellence in Communications Award from the American Water Works Association’s Pacific Northwest Section for Best Video – Large Utility for a Clean Water Works.
This year, Joe will continuing mentoring others as he serves as a judge for all 15 entries of the Bend Film and Kid’s Film contest.
