Bend Habitat: Serving families is what they do

Bend Habitat: Serving families is what they do

The Bend Area Habitat for Humanity is one of 30 nonprofits that BendBroadband provides free or reduced internet and video services. Every Friday during our Month of Giving campaign, BendBroadband is featuring one of these organizations on our web page. In addition, every day we post information about one nonprofit on our Facebook and Twitter sites. We hope you enjoy learning more about these wonderful organizations that help make Central Oregon a better place.

Since 1989, the Bend Area Habitat for Humanity has made an impact in our community by building more than 120 affordable homes and repairing more than 70 homes.  They have served more than 600 children and adults through homeownership, home repair and weatherization.global-site-settings-logo.4

Future homeowner Lynn said she is grateful for the opportunity to have “the pride of home ownership, security for her daughter, and peace of mind.”

By the time she closes on her home in January, Lynn will have completed 200 hours of sweat equity in the building her home.  She will pay a mortgage that is typically no more than 33 percent of the new homeowner’s gross income at the time they applied for the program.

Lynn’s mortgage payments to the Bend Area Habitat for Humanity will go back into the community to help build more affordable housing in the Bend area.

Stephanie Brusett, fundraising and philanthropy associate, said one of the things the Bend Habitat is most proud of this year is that “our Habitat ReStore now covers all of our overhead costs. This means that 100% of the money people donate to Bend Habitat goes directly to impact local families!”

The Bend Habitat ReStore opened in 1997. Habitat ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances at a fraction of the retail price. By shopping, donating, or volunteering, you are helping build homes right here in Bend.

The Habitat ReStore is located at 224 NE Thurston Ave., Bend.  Store hours are Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store accepts donations when open and also on Mondays  (even though the store is closed) through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
