C-SPAN is producing a two-season series on America’s first ladies. Produced in cooperation with the White House Historical Association, “First Ladies: Influence and Image” examines the private lives of these women as well as the public roles they played in the White House. Over two seasons, the series will profile all 45 women who have served in the role over 44 administrations (Grover Cleveland had two non-consecutive administrations but one first lady, and John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson each had two first ladies). This project is the first comprehensive series of biographies of the first ladies produced for television.
C-SPAN and the White House Historical Association also are collaborating on a video-rich website accompanying the series. The interactive site, www.c-span.org/firstladies, features historical letters, documents and photographs, classroom resources, biographies and recordings.
Peabody Award-winning C-SPAN feature producer Mark Farkas serves as executive producer of the series. The 15-episode Season One, which profiles first ladies from Martha Washington through Ida McKinley, starts February 25, 2013 and continues every Monday at 6 p.m. PT until June. Season Two, a 20-episode season that begins with Edith Roosevelt and concludes with Michelle Obama, debuts in September and continues every Monday in prime time until February 2014.
