Current TV rebranded as Al Jazeera America

AlJazeeralogoOn Aug. 20, Current TV will become Al Jazeera America, a new network owned by Al Jazeera.

Like other arms of the international news organization, Al Jazeera America is committed to high-quality, objective and balanced investigative journalism. Al Jazeera America is being built from the ground up. The network is hiring American journalists to report on American stories from coast to coast. Soledad O’Brien, who became a well-known and widely respected journalist as a CNN reporter and anchor, joined Al Jazeera America in July.

Al Jazeera decided to create a U.S.-based news channel in response to demand for its programs by American viewers, who account for almost 40 percent of online viewers of Al Jazeera English programming. Al Jazeera America will make announcements about programming, talent and bureau locations over the coming months.

UPDATE: Al Jazeera America will be available on channel 52. It is included in the BendBroadband Preferred package.
