Academy Awards on KOHD-ABC

The annual Academy Awards are rolling out the red carpet for Hollywood movie stars on March 2. This year, you can catch everything Hollywood on KOHD-ABC – channel 9 and 609 in HD.

Several major motion pictures are getting early Oscar buzz. “Gravity” with Sandra Bullock and “American Hustle” with Christian Bale each received 10 Oscar nominations, and “12 Years a Slave” with Chiwetel Ejiofor received nine. But as we have seen in the past, the leader of the nomination pack does not necessarily win.

This year, many movie fans are rooting for legendary screen actor Bruce Dern to bring home the award for Best Actor. Dern has received rave reviews for the starring role in “Nebraska,” but he has tough competition from Bale, Ejiofor, Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”). Bale is the only one of the nominees to receive an Oscar to date.

The leading ladies have a strong showing this year. Bullock, Dame Judi Dench (“Philomena”), Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”) and Amy Adams (“American Hustle”) are up against the actress who always seems to walk away with the award, Meryl Streep (“August: Osage County”). Streep has been nominated an astonishing 18 times and has walked away with three Oscar statuettes. Dench, Blanchett and Bullock have one Oscar apiece.

Funny lady Ellen Degeneres is back at the helm of the show. The show kicks off at 4 p.m. PST. If you have to be awake at work the following day, you’d better set your DVR to record the show.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out some of the Oscar-nominated movies, there is still plenty of time. Several of the movies are available On Demand:

  • “Captain Phillips” (nominated for Best Picture)
  • “Blue Jasmine” (Cate Blanchett is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role)
  • “Gravity” – premieres Feb. 25 on VOD (Sandra Bullock is nominated for Best Actress in a leading role)
  • “Dallas Buyers Club” (Matthew McConaughey is nominated for Best Actor in a leading role)
  • “Despicable Me 2” (nominated for Animated Feature Film)
