BendBroadband field technicians are taking their knowledge and expertise and sharing it with area at-risk youth through the Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program.

The Youth Challenge Program is a residential alternative high school where students (or “cadets,” as they’re known in the program) live on site for five months while attending a military model school. It operates similar to a military academy, guided by military principles and structure, and the staff uses a caring and disciplined “tough love” approach to instruct cadets and instill values.

Cadets are eligible to earn a high school diploma, GED or credit recovery of eight certified credits if they complete the required class work. The mission of the program — which targets students who have “dropped out of high school, (are) not attending school, or are failing in school,” according to the website — is to provide opportunities for personal growth, self-improvement and academic achievement.

That’s where BendBroadband comes in. For the past three years, our field technicians have set up shop at the Youth Challenge Program in an effort to interact with students that are interested in telecommunications. Field techs answer cadets’ questions about the industry, talk about career opportunities and demonstrate how to use some of the equipment they use on the job, said Brad Logan, manager of field operations.

“We feel it is a great way to give back to the community,” Logan said, “and at the same time a good recruitment mechanism.”

Logan credited Josh LaForest for coordinating the effort, which lines up nicely with BendBroadband’s longstanding commitment to give back to Central Oregon by supporting educational efforts and promoting family wellness.

  1. So your techs are going to teach these kids everything they know, what will they do after that is done in about 10 minutes? Maybe teach them the finer points of how to piss off customers. For instance setting appointments with a 12 hour range.
