Abilitree: Empowering lives, growing independence

Abilitree is one of more than 30 nonprofits that BendBroadband provides free or reduced internet and video services. During our December Month of Giving campaign, BendBroadband featured local nonprofits on our website, Facebook and Twitter sites. We hope you enjoyed learning more about these wonderful organizations that help make Central Oregon a better place.

Dana was born with hereditary spastic paraplegia and today she requires the use of a wheelchair. Dana said she came to Abilitree looking for work and support. Today, Dana works as a file clerk for the City of Bend.

“I feel that work brings me independence,” said Dana.  “Without Abilitree I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

Preston came to Abilitree because he needed help finding a job. “I enjoy working. It makes me feel good,” said Preston, who has a development disability. Thanks to Abilitree, Preston now works at DrinkTanks. His boss, Wilson, said he appreciates Preston and the smile he brings to work each day. “He’s a great employee.”

These are just two amazing stories of how Abilitree is making an impact in Central Oregon. Abilitree provides support with job placement, skills training, peer support, advocacy, and referral services.

Abilitree supports over 700 individuals in Central Oregon, including people who experience a wide range of disabilities, including stroke and cancer survivors, and individuals with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities.

“We appreciate the internet support that BendBroadband provides our organization,” said Tim Johnson, executive director of Abilitree, a nonprofit based in Bend that empowers people with disabilities to grow their independence. “BendBroadband’s generous donation helps us communicate with the individuals we serve, our community partners, and our valued donors.  Our heartfelt thanks to BendBroadband for helping us empower people with disabilities to live full and independent lives.”

TDS, the parent company of BendBroadband, hired Abilitree a few years ago to help with a direct mail campaign. The partnership was a win-win for TDS. Abilitree and their team of workers completed the job on time and for a reasonable price.
