Job options are available in cable industry

Josh LaForest is offering options for at-risk youth, and more importantly providing hope.

Josh has been working for BendBroadband for the past 11 years and now serves as a Lead Technician.

Josh works with the Oregon Youth Challenge Program, an alternative high school located in Bend, for “at-risk” youth. He teaches young adults about the opportunities available in the cable industry, with the goal of helping young people get back on track.

Students attend the program for six months with an end goal of becoming a high school graduate. The program is highly structured, where along with their studies they must get up and exercise each day.

A job fair is held following the conclusion of the program. Josh and several co-workers are there to answer questions and provide them with hope that there are employment options in the cable industry. “We let them know, there’s an opportunity to be successful in life, even (with everything) they’ve been through.”

Josh said BendBroadband can provide the young people the training necessary to help them be successful in their jobs. “You can really going anywhere in the world and install phone, cable and internet. There’s really no place that doesn’t have it.”

From installing phone services, Josh said he lets the students know that you can work in so many other fields including engineering, data centers, and construction;

“I’ve realized there are a lot people out there who just need to be shown the possibilities,” said Josh.
