Balloons Over Bend: a weekend with nylon, color

Balloons Over Bend: a weekend with nylon, color

Summer comes with a lot of perks: warmer weather, longer daylight hours, greener grass and [sometimes] more free time. For Bend, summer also brings a sky-filled festival of hot air balloons.

The weekend of July 27-29, Bend will be hosting its annual hot air balloon festival, Balloons Over Bend. BendBroadband is proud to sponsor this event filled with beauty, community, family-fun and, of course, hot air balloons.

The first balloon launch hit the skies on Friday, July 27 at sunrise from the RE Jewell Elementary School, the same time and location for the following sunrise launches on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday and Saturday nights, Night Glows begin at 5 p.m. from Riverbend Park and Sam Johnson Park in Redmond, respectively.

Anyone is welcome to come at sunrise or sunset to watch as the sky is filled with color and possibly have the opportunity to meet the pilots behind the action. All balloon flights are weather permitting.

On Saturday, a Children’s Festival will be hosted at the Deschutes Historical Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Between bounce houses, carnival games, face painting and a bike rodeo, there is something for everyone.

The festival will raise funds for Saving Grace, an organization that provides resources for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, educates about abuse prevention, and promotions prevention, intervention and support.

Kids ages 3-10 can also participate in the Balloons Blast Kids Race, part of the Kids Rock the Races series. The event is held at Troy Field on Saturday and begins at 12 p.m., with different age groups racing at different times.
