Best horror films of all time

Successful horror films play to our greatest fears and phobias. Elements that make scary movies work include:

Death (A must for any horror film)
The Dark (What are kids afraid of?)
Creepy Things (Rats, spiders, snakes)
The Unknown/Scary Places (Graveyards, old homes, attics)
Suspense/Tension (Alfred Hitchcock was the master)
Spooky Music (Umm, Psycho)
Lightning and Thunder (a mainstay of the horror film)

Rotten Tomatoes summoned the 100 best-reviewed horror films of all time. When checking out the top 10, seven are more than 50 years old.

10. The Night of the Hunter (1955)

7. Repulsion (1965)
6. Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922)

When watching horror films look for these cues that something is going to happen:

  1. Camera angles that are askew or block your view of something.
  2. Music that builds up and then goes silent just before the scare.
  3. A unique evil/bad guy character
