The Sisters Habitat for Humanity is one of more than 40 nonprofits that BendBroadband provides free or reduced internet and video services. During our December Month of Giving campaign, BendBroadband is featuring local nonprofits on our website, and social media sites. We hope you enjoy learning more about these wonderful organizations that make Central Oregon a better place.
Several families in Sisters will be celebrating Christmas for the first time in their own home. Thanks to the Sisters Habitat for Humanity, these families are now living the dream of home ownership.
Since they were established in 1991, the Sisters Habitat for Humanity has partnered with a total of 64 families and repaired four homes. They are dedicated to eliminating substandard housing, advocating for fair housing policies, and energy efficient housing to families in the Sisters School District boundaries.
Mortgage payments, for homes recently sold, average $500 per month (including property tax and insurance). These houses are sold at no profit to partner families, financed with no-interest mortgages that are issued for 30 years.
Sisters Habitat for Humanity’s criteria for selection of homeowners is based on the family’s need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay and the willingness to partner.
Homeowner families are required to invest 500 “sweat equity” labor hours prior to occupying their home. Families are required to complete educational courses such as budgeting and home maintenance to prepare them for the rigors of owning a home.
What makes the program affordable, is that homeowners pay Habitat a monthly mortgage at 0% interest rate. In addition, all of the Habitat homes are built by volunteers working under the supervision of a construction manager.
Earlier this year, the Sisters Habitat for Humanity worked with another local non profit, the Heart of Oregon Corps, that BendBroadband also provides reduced internet and video services. Twenty-five young people from the Heart of Oregon Corps spent the day building walls for the future home of the Ayala family. It’s great to see non profits in our community working side-by-side to improve the lives of those who live in Central Oregon.
In addition to its home building program, the Sisters Habitat for Humanity operates a ReStore and a Thrift store. The ReStore has been part of the community since 2007 and sells home improvement merchandise, quality use furniture, electronics, sporting goods and more. By donating and shopping at the ReStore, you are recycling merchandise and supporting families who are working toward the dream of home ownership. The ReStore is located at 254 W. Adams Ave., Sisters.
The Sisters Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store is located at 141 W. Main Ave., Sisters. The thrift store opened in 1993 and accepts clothing, housewares, linens, toys and holiday items.
Store hours for both stores are: Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
