Congratulations to Central Oregon Daily Photojournalist Steve Kaufmann for receiving the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism.
“The Edward R. Murrow is the Grand Poohbah of awards for news organizations,” said Central Oregon Daily General Manager Shawn Wilcox “This really is among the most prestigious awards to win in news.”
Steve has worked as a television photojournalist for 17 years. This is his third Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in journalism. Steve is a storyteller with a video camera; he has seen almost every type of natural disaster and covered a wide array of stories during his career.
Central Oregon Daily News Director Matthew McDonald said Steve’s influence on the news team stretches well beyond this story.
“He sets an example of editorial judgement and excellence every day,” said Matt. “As much as I enjoy watching his award-winning stories, I enjoy watching him work with our other reporters, anchors, and producers in a teaching capacity. It’s always learning by example.”
Shawn agreed saying Steve’s ability to connect with viewers on an emotional level makes him a perfect fit for Central Oregon Daily.
“I am impressed every day with the enormous amount of journalistic talent we have amassed in such a small market. From anchors and reporters to directors, producers, and videographers, everyone on our news team performs at a very high level every single day,” Shawn said. “That fact is likely the driving force behind Central Oregon Daily’s growth over the last couple of years.”
Unexplained Cattle Mutilations received the top award in Hard News for Small Market Television Markets.
“While a bit on the morbid side, this story is very interesting,” said Shawn. “Steve did an amazing job capturing the intrigue and unexplained phenomenon surrounding these cattle mutilations.”

Regional winners automatically move on to the national round of consideration, which also includes digital news organization, network, and student competitors. Good luck Steve!
