NCAA tourney kicks off March 15 with Selection Sunday

The March Madness journey kicks off each year with Selection Sunday. This year the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament gets into gear on TBS on March 15 at 6 p.m. (EST). Throughout the 68-team, single-elimination tournament, there’s the excitement of those unexpected winners, and the agony of going home earlier than planned.

The NCAA tournament starts with 68 hopeful teams that are trimmed down to the Sweet 16, the Elite 8 and the Final 4. The Final 4 play two games over three days to conclude March Madness. The winner will be declared April 6 in Atlanta.

How teams are selected for the NCAA Tournament
There’s a new system the selection committee will use to select teams for the tournament this season. To replace the RPI, the NCAA developed a new ranking system to evaluate teams during the Division I men’s basketball season.

The new evaluation tool is known as the NET. It relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.

The NET was built to create a ranking system to more fairly evaluate team performance. Certain types of data were omitted from the model including game date and order were omitted to give equal importance to both early and late-season games. In addition, a cap of 10 points was applied to the winning margin to prevent rankings from encouraging unsportsmanlike play, such as needlessly running up the score in a game where the outcome was certain.

The first game will air exclusively on truTV on Tuesday, March 17. Sharing first and second round coverage will be CBS, TNT, TBS, and truTV.

The Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds will air on TBS and CBS. Watch for the Final Four (Saturday, April 4) and the Championship game (Monday, April 6) to be televised exclusively on TBS in primetime.

TDS Cable subscribers will have the ability to stream games live via TV Everywhere! Users can be directed to this site from our TVE portal at  Games broadcast on TBS, TNT and TruTV are available to customers subscribed to the corresponding network in their programming tier to access the TV Everywhere channel.
